Streets and Roads

The Department of Public Works oversees and maintains approximately 126 miles of roadway and some 35 miles of sidewalks within City limits. Public works employees not only maintain the transportation systems, but also make improvements to the City infrastructures and have a multitude of responsibilities, many of which change from season to season. Examples of the seasonal work include grading the gravel roads in the spring; paving, patching, sweeping, line-painting, and sidewalk improvements in the summer and fall; and snow removal operations in the winter. The department has a sign shop and is responsible for over 2000 signs including the new City logo Street Signs, Stop, Speed Limit, Parking, and School Zone signs to name a few. We have begun to install the new retro-reflective signage mandated by the Federal Highway Administration which provides much greater visibility in all types of weather. The department also fully services the entire department's fleet of equipment at the garage located at 8 Grandview Street. The DPW yard includes a pit area where crushed asphalt is recycled, and multiple road and construction materials are stockpiled. Approximately 2000 +/- tons of salt and 3000 +/- tons of sand are stockpiled on an annual basis for winter operations. The department takes great pride in keeping the City of Claremont well maintained and safe. By working together with the citizens of Claremont who observe and notify us of deficiencies, we can continue to maintain the City to the best of our ability while increasing our level of service.
